A Skin/Cellulite Rant + My New Food Love

Thanks, everyone, for your input on my last blog about my image being used in places I didn’t authorize. Roni, I may take you up on your offer and send YOU after them if I get no satisfaction! LOL

I was bored in line at the grocery store yesterday and looked through a celeb magazine showing photos of skin/cellulite on stars (women, OF COURSE. Why are men always spared those photos?). The magazine, as usual, branded these loose skin and cellulite issues as “problems” – horrible and wretched and “how can they stand to live with themselves” type of problems. I thought to myself, ‘It’s just skin! How is that hurting them or hurting me or hurting anyone else?’

Then I thought about how air-brushed our celebrity culture is and wondered if most people believe that air-brushed and tons of makeup is reality? Is that what we are all to aspire to?

I have skin issues. Not as many as some people who’ve lost a lot of weight, and I don’t think of my issues as a problem, but I’d be pissed if someone took a photo of my stomach or my inner thighs when I was unaware and plastered it on the cover of a magazine and called it “ugly” or labeled it “bad.” What’s bad about it? What’s so awful terrible about our bodies that other people are so offended?

Fat or thin, we all have things we don’t like about ourselves, but making peace with our outside appearance is better than labeling ourselves as inferior or not worthy or somehow flawed because we aren’t air-brush perfect. I like to think how I conduct myself, if I’m kind and show love and compassion, is more important than how much loose skin I have or if my face breaks out once in awhile.

There’s a balance between body and mind that these magazine editors aren’t getting. I may not always like how I look, but I don’t ever think that my appearance is more important than the person I am inside.

OK, rant over. On to my food discovery.

My new favorite pre-workout pre-breakfast: half a lite English muffin, toasted and topped with half a sliced banana and 1 tablespoon of PB2, a powdered peanut butter made by Bell Plantation that has only 2.5 grams of fat in 2 tablespoons – a MIRACLE food in my book.

I used to think people were nuts to combine peanut butter and bananas. (Wasn’t that Elvis’s favorite sandwich? See why I thought it was a nuts thing to do? I love Elvis, but he was a bit odd.)

Anyway, I was in the mood for PB2 and an English muffin on Sunday, but I also wanted some fruit and bananas were all we had in the house (except for prunes and I wasn’t in the mood so early in the morning, you know?). I thought of Elvis and all the other people I know who rave about peanut butter and bananas and I tried it. And I loved it. And now it’s my new favorite pre-workout pre-breakfast. It will get me through 45 minutes on the arc trainer, a brisk 10-minute walk and a 15-minute ab workout this morning before coming home and having a “real” breakfast. Probably a spinach omelet. Not sure yet.

I call that snack the “diet Elvis.” It’s one of my favorites!As for magazines – I read an interview with one of the top photo editors in the fashion industry, who does all the airbrushing and retouching for Vogue. His opinion was that the unrealistic photo shopped images in magazines are balanced out by unflattering tabloid shots. Maybe, and maybe people who feel bad about themselves feel better to bash celebrities whose money and fame can’t fix their cellulite. But why not appreciate people for what they *actually* look like, instead of having it be an airbrushed vogue cover one day and an unflattering tabloid cover the next?

  2. Lynn,I can’t believe you just now got around to trying bananas with peanut butter. YUM! Now, did you toast the english muffin first so that the PB kind of melts into it? So tasty!As for the images, you bring up an interesting angle – why DO we care so much what OTHER people’s bodies look like? They’d get me to buy the magazines if they showed REAL women instead of painted faces and airbrushed bodies. But then again, sex appeal sells.

  3. I was introduced to peanut butter and bananas on toast, about 20 something years ago, when I first went to WW in NZ. It was my favourite breakfast. It also makes a nice dessert, if you make a slice in the banana, stuff it with some peanut butter and sprinkle few chocolate chips over the top. Pop it under a hot grill for a minute or two until the chocolate melts and the peanut butter bubbles a bit. I also wrap it up in tin foil and pop it on the BBQ for a few minutes.BTW, thank you for the link to PB2. I hadn’t heard of it before. I’m ordering some!!As to the skin/cellulite thingy. Phbbbttt to the magazines and media ….. REAL WOMEN RULE !! (I’m feeling particualy empowered today) 🙂

  4. I love peanut butter & bananna on whole wheat high fiber bread. It lasts for hours.Lynn – I have a question for you: while you were losing weight, did your family eat what you were eating? Did you cook separate meals for them or did they fend for themselves?

  5. I always laugh at those celebrity photos, “Whose butts are these?” like it’s some dastardly crisis. All the stuff going on in the world and that’s news? Who gives a s whoops, darn what some actress’s butt looks like? So weird.

  7. Good morning. I’m on a wt loss journey and just stumbled across your site. Wow. It took me 30 minutes to read it all, but what an inspiration. My starting wt wasat 212.5 and I’ve lost about 20 lbs so far. It’s taken a long time, but my dh says that’s ok, your body won’t fight you to get it back (and also it’s become more of a lifestyle along the way) I really identify with you as we are about the same age and I seem to have the same feelings about myself, and I can imagine feeling the way you felt as I my numbers go down the scale. I can’t wait to get into the non-obese zone only 2 more pounds to get there for me, and then to my wedding weight – 35 lbs to get there. I hope I can re-visit your site over annd over again for inspiration. THanks, Mo

  8. I’ve been eating peanut butter and bananas for many many years. How do I feel about my body? For the first time in months I’ve not had kidney pain for the past week or two, so I’m feeling pretty darn good about my body. As far as the shape of my body, I’d like for it to be about 30 pounds lighter, but at 45 I’m never going to look like a model (shoot, I didn’t look like a model at 25 either) and I’m good with that.

  9. Ok I just found your blog and I am wondering how did you start your weight loss journey, did you first start following WW and then come up with your own eating plan? Debbie has asked a very important question, did you cook separate meals or did everyone eat the same thing? If I am asking anything already explained on your blog already please excuse me. I need to lose at least 40 pounds, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  10. I’m so with you guys on this. I want to see REAL bodies, not extremes or exploited photos on either side. Wanted to let you know I got a request for an interview from a British magazine and it sounded legit until I got to this part: “Also, I know this also a very personal question but I read on your blog that you have some excess skin now – do you have any photos to illustrate?!”They want to exploit my skin?! I don’t think so. I laughed pretty hard when I read that. Debbie and Tawanda, I’m answering your question in my next blog. Thanks for the great comments!
